About the event
Steering Workshop
One-Day Clinic | Gisborne, Aotearoa
Lead the waka. Read the water. Make the call.
Our Steering One-Day Workshop is a focused, high-impact clinic designed specifically for current and aspiring steerspeople who want to sharpen their technical skill, decision-making, and leadership presence in the canoe.
Steering is more than holding a blade at the back of the boat. It is reading conditions, managing crew energy, making split-second tactical calls, and holding responsibility for safety and performance. This workshop is built to develop confident, capable leaders at the helm.
Held in Gisborne — the birthplace of waka ama in New Zealand — this intensive experience draws on the region’s deep paddling legacy and high-performance culture. Training takes place at Horouta Waka Hoe, one of Aotearoa’s most successful clubs and a consistent Top Club of the Year at the Waka Ama Sprint Nationals. The environment itself sets a high standard.
